10 Thoughts You Have While Swimming the 1500/1650 Freestyle

Whether you swim the mile in a club meet or at the Olympic Trials, there are several things that can run through your mind during the race. Below are 10 thoughts that race through our heads when swimming the longest pool event of the meet.

At the Start– No worries, it’s only a mile… I swim a couple of those every practice! This’ll be easy.

50 Meters– Why are these people taking this out so fast?! We still have a long way to go…

350 Meters– OK, well, this isn’t too bad! I’m right on pace and I’m feeling fantastic!

650 Meters– Dang…my shoulders are killing me. I’m still on pace though! Easy stuff!

850 Meters– Oh gosh… I should not have eaten that for lunch…over halfway there.

1050 Meters– Wait a minute, was I ahead of this guy earlier?…Or is he lapping me??

1250 Meters– I need a distraction, I can’t feel my arms anymore…

1350 Meters– How far am I? I can’t see the counter. My goggles are all fogged up and I can’t see!

1450 Meters– Wait…is that a goldfish in my lane?…Wait! That’s the counter! I’m almost done!

The Finish– Oh my gosh, I finished! A best time! Now I’m hungry. Someone replace my medal with a Gatorade!

I used to swim this in a 50 m Lido at the end of the season Club championships, after 20 lengths your mind would wonder and think about Elvis songs, The thing is I can’t stand Elvis ?

Well hello Rachel Nevins, I did indeed swim a mile. But I didn’t really have any issues ?
500 400 300 200 100 for long course or 500 400 300 200 100 3x50s sprint for short coarse is how I usually swam it descend negative split
