Richmond Futures, Night Three: Huang Completes Sweep of Fly Events

The third night of competition at 2018 Richmond Futures Championships was bursting with excitement. Two swimmers completed sweeps of the butterfly and breaststroke events, while other younger folks saw large margins of victory.

Women’s 200 Fly

After a third-place finish in the 100 LCM fly last night, Morgan Miller came back with a vengeance. She locked-in the 2018 Richmond Futures 200 fly title in 2:16.44, having dropped 1.20 seconds from her morning swim.

Ellen Brooks from Mariner Swim Club came in second with a time of 2:17.10.

Third to touch was Conneticut Aquatic Club swimmer, Nell Chidley. Her time of 2:18.28 was faster than her prelims time by almost three seconds.

Anna Phelps, one of the “youngsters” previously mentioned in the psych sheet preview, ended up finishing seventh in this event, clocking in at 2:20.41. Phelps was the youngest swimmer in the A-final by two years.

Men’s 200 Fly

Tonight, James Huang completed his sweep of both butterfly events here at Richmond Futures, finishing first with a time of 2:02.66.

The men’s 200 LCM freestyle bronze medalist earned silver tonight in the 200 fly. Alexander (Lexo) Walker finished second, touching in 2:04.17.

After finishing second in the men’s LCM 1500 free on the first night in Richmond, Matthew Bonnell came in third in this event shortly after Walker. His time was 2:04.73.

Women’s 50 Free

Catherine Johnson from All Star Aquatics and East Carolina University was victorious in the women’s 50 LCM freestyle. She swam her race in 26.46.

There was a tie for second-place between Nicole Venema and Lindsey Wagner. The two 17-year-olds both touched at exactly 26.52.

Fordham University rising-senior, Tara Brunner finished fourth with a time of 26.61.

Men’s 50 Free

Scott Romeyn from Central Conneticut Aquatics Team swam his 50 LCM freestyle in 23.19; fast enough to win the event.

Just three one-hundredths behind him (23.21) was Matthew Brownstead for second-place.

Michael Blank, Yale Bulldog and Peddie Aquatic Association swimmer, touched third with a time of 23.43.

Women’s 200 Breast

Alexandra McDaid, also from Peddie Aquatic Association, claimed first in the 200 LCM breaststroke after a third-place finish in the 100 last night. The LSU Tiger dropped over four seconds off of her prelims time to touch the wall at 2:37.73.

Clarissa Sabin, 2018 Richmond Futures 100 breaststroke champion, finished second in the 200 tonight with a time of 2:39.58.

Third-place went to Megan Bull for her 2:39.61.

Men’s 200 Breast

Christopher Bondarowicz completed the second sweep of the night by winning his second breaststroke event. Bondarowicz’s margin of victory was far from small. His time of 2:18.62 was nearly four seconds faster than that of the second-place swimmer.

Harvey Culbert from Greater Columbus Swim Team in Ohio touched after Bondarowicz in at 2:22.43.

Third to the wall was Jacob Haines. The NYU class of 2022 commit clocked in at 2:23.14.

Women’s 100 Back

“Youngster” Natalie Mannion claimed a solid win in the women’s 100 LCM backstroke. Hitting the wall in 1:03.33, she was almost a second ahead of the next finisher, Sadie Runeman (1:04.24). Mannion (14) and Runeman (15) were the two youngest swimmers in tonight’s A-final.

Haley Sutton finished third with a time of 1:04.48.

Men’s 100 Back

Zachary Bishop from Towson University won the men’s 100 LCM backstroke as the only swimmer to dip under 58 (57.97).

Quest Swimming’s Elijah Tarabocchia finished second with a time of 58.29.

Colin Mackellar, representing Panther Aquatic Club, came in third less than two-tenths of a second (58.44) behind Tarabocchia.

Women’s 400 Free

14-year-old Jill Berger clawed her way up from her initial fifth-place seed to win the women’s 400 LCM freestyle. Her time of 4:20.81 was almost three seconds ahead of the rest of her competition.

After finishing second in the 200 freestyle, Sophia Kudryashova claimed silver in the 400 as well (4:23.63).

University of Florida commit, Tylor Mathieu, came in third with a  time of 4:24.57.

Men’s 400 Free

Zachary Washart won the title of 400 LCM freestyle champion with a time of 4:01.96.

About a second later (4:02.83), Bonnell swam for silver in the final event of the night.

Rounding out third was James Plage, the 1500 freestyle champion, who clocked in at 4:03.06.
