FLASH! Gretchen Walsh Lowers 100 Fly WR To 53.24; Takes Down Maggie MacNeil’s Mark
Gretchen Walsh lowered the 100 fly world record to 53.24 on day four of prelims at short-course worlds in Budapest.
The USA swimmer took 0.71 from the previous standard of 54.05 set by Canadian Maggie MacNeil at Melbourne 2022.
It was Walsh’s fourth individual world record of the meet in as many days.
She set her sights on going through the 53-second barrier in tonight’s semis. She said: “That was my first time ever doing that event in short course metres. Now that I have set where my best time is, I definitely think I can try to go 52 tonight.
“I looked at the record before my swim and I didn’t know where I would stand, but I think I broke it by 0.8 which is crazy.”
The Olympic silver medallist added: “I think I am going to try to be the best version of me, every time I swim it
“Stroke count and kick-out in that race is everything, especially for me, just maximising my kicks while also getting my hands on the wall,
gliding is really important for my execution of my race strategies.
“We’ll see, I don’t know, I need to talk to my coach Todd to see if we’ll make any changes for tonight. I think that I am faster at night anyway so I am hoping that I can get under that time.”
