World Record Holder Etiene Medeiros Tests Positive For Banned Substance
Editorial Coverage Sponsored By FINIS
One of Brazil’s top swimmers and best hopes for an Olympic medal has tested positive for a banned substance according to the Brazilian Anti-Doping Authority (ABCD). World Record holder Etiene Medeiros was found to have traces of fenoterol, an asthma treatment drug, while submitting an out-of-competition test in San Paulo last month.
Both of Medeiros’ A and B samples came back positive.
The ABCD told The Straits Times that all information had been forwarded to the Brazilian Swimming Federation so that they may proceed with disciplinary actions.
Medeiros accelerated into the spotlight back in 2014 when she won the 50-meter backstroke title in world record time at the FINA Short Course World Championships in Doha. And her success didn’t stop there. Medeiros grabbed silver in the 50-M back at FINA’S Long Course World Championships in Kazan last summer, and became the first Brazilian woman to win a gold medal in the 100-meter back in Pan Am record time at the Pan American Games.
