U.S. Paralympic Championships: Morgan Stickney Sets Pair of World Records

Morgan Stickney set a pair of world records Saturday at the U.S. Paralympic Swimming Championships in Orlando.

Stickney went 19:21.10 in the timed final of the women’s S7 1,500 freestyle on Saturday morning at the Rosen Aquatic Center. That time trounced the world record that had belonged since 2018 to teammate McKenzie Coan at 20:20.78. Stickney’s 800 free split in the race was 10:14.47, which bested Coan’s 10:37.70.

“First off, I’m just so grateful to have the opportunity to race this weekend,” Stickney told U.S. Para Swimming. “That was the first time racing the 1500m as an amputee, so I definitely had no expectations going in. I just wanted to have fun because it’s my favorite event. Nationals is a great opportunity to get more racing in. I’m going through a lot medically, so I’m honestly just grateful to be here.”

In the same race, Olivia Chambers clocked in at 17:53.84. That displaces by a slim .06 seconds the record set in 2014 by American Becca Meyers.

Stickney won the race, followed by Chambers and Taylor Winnett (S10).

Max Kubik, an S9 swimmer, won the men’s 1,500 free in 20:08.98.

Morgan Ray, who set a world record in the men’s SB6 200 breaststroke on Friday, added American marks over 50 and 100 meters on Saturday. He went 1:22.85 in prelims of the 100 and 1:22.31 in the final. Most of that drop came in the first 50, which set the American mark at 39.19 at night.

Second to Ray in the official standings was David Abrahams (SB13) with a time of 1:07.27. Zack Shattuck (SB6) was third.

In the morning session, Jeff Lovett won the timed final of the 200 butterfly, the S14 swimmer going 2:28.41. He was 2.5 seconds ahead of S9 Braxton Wong.

In the evening finals, Elizabeth Marks (S6) won the 100 backstroke in 1:22.94. The fastest time of the day was posted by Gia Pergolini (S13) in 1:06.62. Second place went to Alexandra Truwit (S10) in 1:12.89.

Pergolini would return to win the women’s 50 free, her time of 27.88 the fastest of the session. Second was Natalie Sims (S9) in 30.24, with Coan third in 34.04. Grace Nuhfer (S13) posted the second fastest overall time of 28.58, and Colleen Young went 29.87 in the same class. Truwit went 30.70.

Lawrence Sapp won an all-S14 battle in the 100 back. His time of 1:06.01 edged out Trevor Lukacsko’s 1:07.81 for gold. Braxton Wong was third.

The men’s 50 was likewise a showdown. The win went to Jamal Hill, the S9 swimmer going 25.40. He edged S8 Noah Jaffe, who clocked in at 27.39. Third place in the overall classification went to S9 Ilija Tadic, who clocked in at 26.62 one of five S9 swimmers to break 30 seconds. Sawyer Mills (S10) went 27.32.
