Top-Ranked Recruit in Nation, Edward Kim, Picks Harvard
SAMMAMISH, Washington, October 8. THE Ivy League just scored one of its biggest recruits in a long time as the top-ranked male recruit in the Class of 2014, Edward Kim, made it official that he’s headed to Harvard.
That’s huge news for the Ivy League, as the top 10 swimmers usually all wind up in the Big Three of the Southeastern Conference, Pacific 12 or the Big Ten. And, what is even more surprising is that Harvard pulled Kim in from across the country, so there were no hometown ties keeping Kim home.
It’s official! Committed to Harvard University, Class of 2018!!— Ed (@EdwardKim1234) October 8, 2013
Bellevue’s Kim is top ranked by CollegeSwimming.com primarily due to his top-end sprinter speed. He owns a 44.29 in the 100-yard free as well as a 48.84 in the 100-yard back and a 1:45.22 in the 200-yard back. He also has a 22.56 in the 50-yard back and a 25.35 in the 50-yard fly, all of which will make Kim an immediate impact player on the sprint free and medley relays.
Kim also has some long course ability, having clocked a 51.35 in the 100-meter free, and a 57.94 in the 100-meter back just a year ago. Kim also earned a spot in the Sports Illustrated Faces in the Crowd feature earlier this year in the March 25 issue.
Kim joins No. 38 Shane McNamara as two top-40 swimmers to have committed to Harvard.
