TCNJ Upsets JHU in NCAA D3 Featured Meet of the Week
The CSCAA‘s ninth-ranked The College of New Jersey Lions upset number four Johns Hopkins Blue Jays in a tri meet with Division two West Chester University. The TCNJ and JHU meet was a NCAA D3 Featured Meet of the Week. TCNJ beat JHU by a score of 163.5 to 124.5.
TCNJ topped the Blue Jays in the opening 200 medley relay, finishing in a 1:34.70 ahead of JHU’s 1:36.41.
JHU claimed the top two spots in the men’s 1,000. Andrew Greenhalgh was as dominant as expected. He claimed the event in a time of 9:36.23 and his teammate Erik Bostrom finished second in a 9:45.85. Logan Barnes from TCNJ was the third D3 finisher in a 10:00.60.
The top D3 finisher in the 200 freestyle was JHU’s Evan Holder with a second place time of 1:43.43. His teammate John Chu was fourth in 1:44.37. TCNJ’s Scott Vitabile was third in 1:43.99.
The Lions’ Alexander Skoog claimed the 100 backstroke title in a 53.70. His teammate Dante Colucci was fourth with a time of 54.27. Third went to JHU’s Emile Kuyl with a 54.20.
James Shangle of TCNJ won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 56.45. His teammate Vinnie Masciandaro was the third place D3 finisher with his fifth place time of 1:00.79. JHU’s Peter Lazorchak was third overall with a 1:00.02.
JHU’s Kyle Otazu won the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:57.22. His teammate was fourth in a 1:59.70. TCNJ’s Samuel Maquet was third overall in a 1:58.98.
Joseph Dunn of TCNJ sprinted to a time of 21.30 to win the 50 freestyle. Hopkins’ Michael Ashmead was the second D3 finisher of the meet in 22.08. TCNJ’s Anthony Gurrieri was the third D3 swimmer with a 22.16.
TCNJ also won the longer sprint as Scott Vitabile finished in a time of 47.52. JHU were the second and third D3 swimmers as John Chu finished in a 48.25 and Ashmead posted a time of 48.27.
The Lions’ momentum continued into the 200 backstroke. Skoog was the fastest D3 performer with his time of 1:55.54. Nearly five seconds behind him was teammate John Gregory with a 2:00.04. Hopkins’ Andrew Gibson was just behind in a 2:00.20.
After his 1,000 freestyle win, Greenhalgh was second overall in the 500 in a time of 4:40.90. His teammates Otazu and Bostrom were just behind in a times of 4:45.24 and 4:48.15.
TCNJ teammates Dunn and Vitabile were second and third overall in the 100 butterfly finishing in times of 52.25 and 53.49. JHU’s Darren Loh was less than a tenth behind with a 53.58.
The Blue Jays’ Evan Holder won the 400 IM with a 4:07.26. His teammate Emile Kuyl was the third D3 finisher with a 4:19.61. TCNJ’s Logan Barnes finished in between the two with a 4:15.13.
Finishing off their winning performance, TCNJ topped the 400 freestyle relay by four seconds in a time of 3:08.60. JHU finished in a time of 3:12.40.
