Bentonville High School won the women’s and men’s Arkansas high school state championships this weekend. The women were led by Texas A&M commit Taylor Pike.
Pike led off the team’s winning 200 medley relay that posted a 1:49.92. On that relay she swam with Paige Taylor, Madeline Marks, and Loren Hedgecock. Pike went on to win the 100 butterfly in 54.11, just two tenths off her own state record. Searcy’s Rachel McGuirt was runner up in 55.05.
Pike was then the only swimmer under five minutes in the 500 freestyle, finishing in 4:49.28, exactly a second off the 2011 state record set by Jenny Holtzen.
The senior also led off the event winning and state record setting 400 freestyle relay that posted a time of 3:35.15. Pike and Hedgecock teamed up with Gabrielle Collins and Elaina Quandt for that victory.
Marks and Hedgecock finished 1-2 in the 200 freestyle in times of 1:56.09 and 1:56.70. Hedgecock captured gold in the 100 freestyle in 53.16.
Hayden Harlow was a leader of the men’s efforts, playing a role in two winning relays and taking two individual event titles. Harlow was dominant in the 100 breaststroke, touching in 55.84. Conway’s Andersen Mainord also slid under a minute with his 59.60. Harlow won the 200 IM by over ten seconds in 1:50.46, just .02 shy of his own school record set last year.
He swam the breaststroke leg of the state record setting 200 medley relay. Harlow, Zaone Sutton, Ryan Husband, and Simon Mooney combined for a 1:34.19, over a second faster than the 1:35.97 Bentonville swam last year.
The same quartet posted a 3:08.24 in the 400 freestyle relay, ten seconds ahead of the next best team and six seconds faster than the Bentonville 2010 state record.
Husband won the 200 freestyle (1:39.97) and the 100 freestyle (45.59). That 100 freestyle lowered the 2009 state record of 45.93.
Bentonville West’s Gavin Vann clocked a state record 50.38 in the 100 backstroke, lowering his own mark of 50.56 from last year.
