The 2015 YMCA Long Course National Championships kicked off yesterday with a large variety of swimmers posting fast times.
Night one of the meet featured the men’s and women’s 1500-meter free.
Hickory’s Emmaline Peterson grabbed the win in the women’s 1500-meter free with a sizzling 16:50.75, finishing 6.26 seconds ahead of the competition. Abbey Erwin of Downtown Boise claimed second overall with a 16:57.01, while Northwest’s Meghan Joram rounded out the top three with a 17:14.16 finish.
Cheshire’s Karl Bishop smoked the competition in the men’s 1500-meter free with a final time of 15:47.16. Wilton’s Robby Giller took second with a time of 15:54.99, while Ridley’s Matthew Haigh was third with a finishing time of 16:01.54.
Ali Galyer of Middle Tyger kicked off day two of the meet with a win in the women’s 200-meter back posting a sizzling 2:!5.55, finishing 2.91 seconds ahead of the competition. Countryside’s Emma Otten claimed second with a final time of 2:18.46, while Kate Moore of Triangle Area took third with a 2:18.72.
Sean Workman of Edwardsville-IL claimed the men’s 200-meter back title with a time of 2:03.92. Kishwaukee’s Daniel Hein took second overall with a 2:05.17, while third went to Wilton’s Ed Stolarski (2:06.44).
Countryside’s Megan Sichterman grabbed a narrow first-place finish in the women’s 100-meter fly with a final time of 1:01.72. Meredith Whisenhunt of Middle Tyger and Caitlin Tycz of Bath Area kept it close the entire race posting similar splits for the 50 and 100. Despite a faster first 50-meters from Tycz Whisenhunt was able to catch her and tie the race at 1:01.95. The two split the points for second.
Fifteen-year-old David May of Cheshire bested the competition in the men’s 100-meter fly posting a final time of 55.09. May was the second youngest in the finals heat, with only sixth-place finisher Brendan Burns (14) younger than him. Hein finished second with a time of 55.76, while Jack Frazier of Middle Tyger claimed third with a 55.98.
Cha O’Leary of Montclair claimed the win in the women’s 200-meter breaststroke posting a final time of 2:36.41. Wilton’s Emma Holmquist grabbed second with a 2:37.72, while Middle Tyger’s Sydney Baker was third with a 2:38.47.
The men’s 200-meter breaststroke proved to be a close race with the top three finishers posting times within .56 seconds of each other. Fifteen-year-old Majester Abdul-Jalil bested the competition with a final time of 2:21.09. Jacob Limaldi of Red Bank took second with a time of 2:21.59, while Butler’s Chad Cummings finished third with a 2:21.65.
The women’s 200-meter medley relay went to Middle Tyger’s relay team who posted a final time of 1:57.57. Triangle Area took second with a 1:59.04, while FanwoodScotch was third with a 1:59.25.
Cheshire’s relay team won out in the men’s 200-meter medley relay with a winning time of 1:46.10. Red Bank was a close second with a final time of 1:46.20, while SomersetValley rounded out the top three with a finishing time of 1:46.93.
