After winning by under 40 points last year, the Santa Margarita women showed their speed and depth en route to a dominating performance at the 2017 CIF Southern Section Division 1 Championships this evening.
St. Margarita teammates Samantha Shelton and Ella Ristic tied in the 200 freestyle. The junior and freshman stopped the clock in 1:45.76. Ristic was fresh off the medley relay. Not far behind was Katie Glavinovich of Jserra in 1:46.85.

In the night’s first event, Ventura won the 200 medley relay by nearly three quarters of a second. The team of Tea Laughlin, Alicia Harrison, Lindsay Clark, and Amelia Ayala touched in 1:42.64. Woodbridge’s Sydney Okubo, Juliana Witting, Molly McCance, and Kate Krolikowski touched in 1:43.28. Third went to St. Margarita’s Ristic, Isabelle Odgers, Mia Ristic, and Marriott Hoffmann with a 1:43.86.

Tennessee commit Nikol Popov won the 200 IM in dominating fashion. The Valencia-Val senior broke two minutes with a 1:59.52. Tesoro’s Jessica Epps was runner up in 2:01.20 and Woodbridge’s Sydney Okubo (2:04.19) finished third.

Popov went two for two, clocking a 1:00.58 to win the 100 breaststroke at the end of the meet. Ventura senior Alicia Harrison (1:01.78) was second and Woodbridge sophomore Juliana Witting (1:02.76) was third.

In a very tight race Popov’s teammate Julia Wolf out touched St. Margarita’s Anicka Delgado by .01 for the 50 freestyle crown. Wolf went a 22.97 while Delgado touched in 22.98.

St. Margarita grew its lead, this time with a win from freshman Anicka Delgado in the 100 butterfly. She clocked a 54.02, just two tenths ahead of Sage Matsushima of Marina in 54.29. Also under 55 seconds was Hannah Farrow of Fountain Valley (54.84).

Newport Harbor’s Ayla Spitz was the only swimmer under 50 seconds in finals of the 100 freestyle. The sophomore posted a 49.80. Ventura’s Alicia Harrison (50.02) earned silver and St. Margarita’s Mackenzie Degn (50.03) was just .01 behind for third.

Ella Ristic and Glavinovich had an impressive battle in the 500 freestyle. Ristic kept it close but Glavinovich maintained her lead the entire way through the 450. Powered by a 28.04 on the final lap, Ristic edged the senior 4:48.26 to 4:48.68 for the section title. Krolikowski of Woodbridge tied for third with Shayla Erickson of Fountain Valley. The duo touched in 4:51.73.

Saint Margarita won the meet’s midpoint relay in record setting fashion. Delgado, Hoffman, Degn, and Shelton touched in 1:32.33, just .02 quicker than the division 1 200 freestyle relay mark set in 2013. Shelton had the standout split, a 22.07 on the anchor.
Valencia-Val’s Julia Wolf, Popov, Kaila Wong, and Sonaly Wintermute finished second (1:34.07) while San Marcos’ Luiza Moreno, Piper Smith, Paige Hauschild, and Ange Drake (1:36.73) rounded out the top three.

Shelton seized her second victory in the 100 backstroke with a 53.04. Tea Laughlin, a freshman from Ventura, went a 53.72 for second. Spitz (54.74) picked up bronze.

Shelton, Degn, Delgado, Ristic ended the night in record fashion with a 3:18.26 in the 400 freestyle relay.Three swimmers split under 50 seconds, including a 48.71 from freshman Ristic. The old record was the 3:20.62 the quartet posted in Thursday’s prelims.
Newport Harbor’s Zoe Spitz, Ayla Spitz, Caroline Yasko, and Melinda Stevens swam a 3:27.80 for second. Finishing third was Jacquelyn Harris, Madeline Sandstead, Terra Matsushima, and Sage Matsushima of Marina in 3:28.59.

Santa Margarita ended the meet as Section Champions with 461 points. Valencia-Valencia scored a total of 206 points though fell to third in the final event, with their relay only finishing 18th. Tesoro was tenth in the final relay to score 221 points and finish second.
