Ryan Hoffer Does It Again! Downs 15-16 50 Free NAG at Juniors
FEDERAL WAY – Scottsdale’s Ryan Hoffer lowered his 15-16 national age group record yet again in the 50-yard free at the Speedo Winter Junior Nationals.
Hoffer scorched the pool with a sterling time of 19.38. That time eclipsed his morning NAG of 19.45 that had pushed his record down from a 19.53 at the Arizona State High School Championships a month ago.
Hoffer, 16, is starting to near Caeleb Dressel territory. Dressel owns the meet record and 17-18 national age group record with an 18.94 from last year. Hoffer is progressing quickly towards that type of top-end speed.
Nitro’s Tate Jackson took second in 20.09 with PASA’s Albert Gwo placing third in 20.11.
Thomas Anderson (20.19), Mark McGlaughlin (20.20), Michael Jensen (20.20), Cole Cogswell (20.29) and Andre Vergani (20.48) placed fourth through eighth in the championship finale.
Scottsdale’s Jack Blake claimed the B final crown in 20.18 with 15-year-old pro Michael Andrew touching second in 20.27.
Tampa Bay’s Cooper Hoffman and Metro’s Dean Farris tied for third with matching 20.61s.
Tabahn Afrik (20.62), Adam Koster (20.67), Kyle Decoursey (20.74) and Will Hofstadter (20.75) rounded out the B final.
Colorado Springs’ Hunter Doerr grabbed the C final title in 20.41, while Daniel Krueger placed second in 20.45.
Blair Bish (20.49), Ty Powers (20.54), Jabari Baptiste (20.72), Noah Hensley (20.78), Kyle Grissom (20.92) and Cody Cline (21.21) also competed in the bonus heat.

Check this kid for too many Big Macs/Double Whoppers and whatever that giant burger @. Carl’s Jr.is called!
Cesar who? Nathan who? Florent who?
Florent I go that fast metres isn’t worried about teenage Americans
Felix, what you fail to understand is that 19.38 is a METERS time,
See in the finals they moved the bulkhead back to 50 m for Hofer’s lane only and when Florent woke up this morning and saw some “10-year-old kid” go 19.3 for 50 meters he immediately announced his retirement!
Bill, cut Felix a break. He certainly doesn’t entirely follow your sense of humor (who does?) and apparently doesn’t have an appreciation of SCY v SCM performances; let’s at least help him with the latter. Further, nobody expects Florent to be “worried” now, but he just turned 24, whereas Ryan is still just 16. Ryan may move into Florent’s range or he may not, but give him a little time.
The top SCM and SCY times in the 50 free are somewhat comparable. 7 of the top 10 all time non-tech suit SCM 50s (Cielo(Brazil-Auburn), Manadou(France), Morozov(Russia-Southern Cal), Bousquet (France-Auburn), Adrian(USA-Cal), Santos (Brazil), Bovell(TRI-Auburn), Ervin(USA-Cal), Sedov (Russia), Schoeman (RSA-Arizona))were done by athletes who swam in USA colleges and thus have SCY rest/shave times in the books. And in addition to these 7, other athletes from Brazil (Chiereghini), RSA(Tandy) and Great Britain (Brown) are in the SCY top 10 50s. When looking at the best times for each in the different courses, a common differential at this level is about 1.8 to 1.9 seconds (i.e. Cielo’s top non-tech SCY 18.69 v 20.51 SCM = 1.82; Morozov 18.63 v 20.55= 1.92) Thus, it would be fair to consider Manadou’s SCM 20.26 as equivalent to about 18.33 in SCY and Hoffer’s SCY swim as equivalent to SCM of 21.21. Hoffer’s got 8 years to improve a second. And maybe 5-6 years, if ever, before Manadou needs to start worrying.
Ought to make it clear as mud, right Felix?
Dif is all them cats was shaved, tapered and rested whereas Hoffer’s been doing 30K DOUBLES ALL WEEK prior to coming here!
When he tapers down to 25K and takes off the army boots — look out Michael Phelps!!!
Felix:
I know nada from sc meters but I do know that Anthony Ervin co-won a 50 free gold @. Sydney as an 18-year-old and he was NEVER 19.3 scy prior going to Cal that fall.
I’M NOT SUGGESTING Hoffer’ll be on the plane to RIO LET ALONE WIN BUT THERE is a precedent.
As for Abby Weitzeil’s 21.49 50 relay leadoff even mas amazing when you consider how fast Simone Manuel is…breaking her month-old record by a full tenth ain’t too shabby.
I realize swimming a 50 yard free is a whole different ballgame than doing it in the big pool but these swims show the potential is there.
As for Florent “quaking in his boots” (Speedo?) no he’s probably not losing any sleep over a 16-year-old kid but come Rio he just might.
At least I hope so!
