Race Video: Watch Maria Astashkina Set World Junior Record in 200 Breast
One of the top young European stars, Maria Astashkina, competed today at the inaugural European Games and managed to lower the World Junior Record in the women’s 200-meter breast.
The Baku 2015 European Games have uploaded all of the day 3 race videos to their YouTube account, including the World Junior Record below. The race has been inaccurately titled as the 200 fly, but the swim certainly is a breaststroke competition.
Original report:
Russia’s Maria Astashkina took center stage at the European Games with a World Junior Record in the women’s 200-meter breast.
FINALS
Russia’s Maria Astashkina downed the World Junior Record in the women’s 200-meter breast with a time of 2:23.06. That performance lowered the previous mark of 2:23.12 set by Viktoriya Solncevaat the 2013 World Junior Championships, and pushed Astashkina up to sixth in the world rankings.
That win is Astashkina’s second of the meet, having already topped the 50 breast with a 31.58 on day one. She’s now set up for a breaststroke sweep.
Italy’s Giulia Verona finished second tonight in 2:25.91 with Great Britain’s Layla Black earning third in 2:27.61.
