Paul Biedermann Blasts World Best in 200 Free

Paul Biedermann, the 2009 Swimming World European Swimmer of the Year who has seen a bit of a career resurgence this year, jumped to the top of the world in the men’s 200-meter free tonight at the German National Championships.

Biedermann blasted a top time of 1:45.60, moving ahead of the 1:45.75 Sun Yang just posted in China earlier this week. Biedermann still has some time to drop to catch up to his techsuit-fueled 2009 world record of 1:42.00.  Felix Aubock took second tonight in 1:48.01 with Clemens Rapp placing third in 1:48.30.

Marco Koch moved to third in the world in the men’s 200-meter breast with a time of 2:09.72.  This after he witnessed Japan put up eight of the top 10 times in the world in one day. Only Yasuhiro Koseki (2:07.77) and Ryo Tateishi (2:09.54) have been faster this year.  Christian vom Lehn placed second in 2:11.13 for 11th in the world with Max Pilger earning third in 2:11.35.

Alexandra Wenk claimed the women’s 100-meter fly crown in 58.18 to stand 13th in the world.  Franziska Hentke took second in 59.46 with Daniela Schreiber placing third in 1:00.76.

Markus Gierke topped the men’s 100-meter fly in 53.41 with Philip Heintz touching second in 53.86. Marius Kusch placed third in 53.89.

Dorothea Brandt won the women’s 50-meter free in 24.84 after posting a 10th-ranked 24.83 earlier in the meet.  Anna Dietterle took down a German junior record with a second-place time of 25.35 with Nina Kost finishing third in 25.53.

Vanessa Grimberg hit the wall in 2:26.45 to win the women’s 200-meter breast.  Michelle Lambert finished second in 2:29.30 with Margarethe Hummel earning third in 2:31.07.

Jenny Mensing won the women’s 100-meter back in 1:00.47, while Laura Riedemann touched second in 1:01.39.  Johanna Roas rounded out the top three in 1:01.42.

Jan-Philip Glania clinched the men’s 100-meter back crown in 54.47 with Christian Diener taking second in 54.52.  Marco Di Carli wound up third in 54.57.

Maximilian Oswald clocked a 22.52 to win the men’s 50-meter free.  Tony Lukas Fitterer placed second in 22.93 with Jonas Bergmann grabbing third in 22.96.

Annika Bruhn snared the women’s 200-meter free title in 1:58.55.  Johanna Friedrich took second in 1:58.98 with Marlene Huther posting a third-place 1:59.14.
