North Carolina Pulls Ahead at the ACC Championships, Tanja Kylliainen Claims New 400 IM ACC Meet and Conference Record

ATLANTA—A staggering five records fall during day three of ACC Championships with Tanja Kylliainen opening with a new 400 IM record.

The evening began with an impressive three second drop from Louisville’s Tanja Kylliainen in the 400 IM. Kylliainen finished with a 4:04.21 to grab a new ACC meet and conference record. Her time earned her an NCAA ‘A’ cut.

Kaitlyn Jones of Virginia also managed to break the ACC meet and conference record with a time of 4:06.62 to earn second place. Virginia Tech’s Fiona Donnelly came in third with 4:08.30.

Kelsi Worrell of Louisville stunned in the 100 fly setting a new ACC meet and conference record of 50.17. This time not only earned her an NCAA ‘A’ cut but is also the third all-time fastest swim behind Natalie Coughlin’s 50.01 and Rachel Komisarz’s 50.10.

Chelsea Britt from Florida State took second with a 51.79 and Leah Goldman of Duke rounded out the top three with a time of 52.28.

In the 200 free Virginia’s Leah Smith was just over a second off of the ACC meet record with a time of 1:43.88 to claim first and an NCAA ‘A’ cut. Danielle Siverling of North Carolina grabbed second with a 1:44.65, and Kaitlyn Dressel was third with a 1:45.13.

Emma Reaney of Notre Dame set a new pool record in the 100 breaststroke touching the wall in 58.72 to claim first and an NCAA ‘A’ cut. Laura Simon of Virginia joined her for an NCAA ‘A’ cut with a time of 58.97. Louisville’s Andrea Cottrell rounded out the top three finishing with a 59.27.

Virginia’s Courtney Bartholomew managed to break her own 100 back record twice over the course of day three swimming a 51.21 in prelims and claiming first with a 51.36 in finals. North Carolina State’s Alexia Zevnik claimed second with a 52.18, while Klaudia Nazieblo finished third in 52.53.

The evening ended on a high note with the Virginia 400 medley relay team of Courtney Bartholomew (50.58), Laura Simon (58.59), Ellen Williamson (51.20) and Kaitlyn Jones (48.42) lowering their own ACC meet record from a 3:29.94 to a 3:28.79. Louisville’s 400 medley relay team of Tanja Kylliainen (50.58), Andrea Cottrell (58.45), Kelsi Worrell (49.89) and Abbie Houck (49.81) joined them for an NCAA ‘A’ cut with a closing time of 3:31.58.

Virginia Tech’s Klaudia Nazieblo (52.69), Weronika Paluszek (1:00.16), Maggie Gruber (52.85) and Jessica Hespeler (49.05) touched third in 3:34.75.

The men climbed to the boards tonight for the final dives of the 3-meter diving portion with freshman Briadam Herrera claiming first with 400.20 points. Virginia Tech’s Logan Stevens grabbed second with 384.75 points, while JB Kolod of Virginia finished in third with 383.95 points.
