Mieko Nagaoka shows no sign of stopping her impressive performances in the pool, and the 100-year-old wonder from Japan made history as the oldest person to complete 1500 meters in competition last weekend.

Nagaoka, who was just named as one of the World Masters Swimmers of the Year by Swimming World Magazine, swam at a short course meters meet in Matsuyama. Swimming backstroke for the entire 1500 meters, she completed the distance in 1 hour, 15 minutes, 54.39 seconds. Since no one 100 years and older has ever completed 1500 meters in a sanctioned Masters competition, Nagaoka adds to her already impressive accolades that includes eight world records in the 100-104 age group from last year.

“I feel relieved that I could complete swimming 1500 meters,” Nagaoka told the media after the swim. “But I will still continue swimming ahead.”

Nagaoka entered Masters swimming relatively late, learning how to swim at 80 years old as rehab for sore knees. She broke her first Japanese national record at 84 years old, and made history as the first centenarian to swim more than 100 meters in a sanctioned meet.

I was at the Masters Nationals at Stanford 25 years ago when 102 year old Tom Lane swam a 1650. These people are amazing.
