PERTH – Micah Lawrence, who is one of Team USA’s best breaststrokers, suffered a leg injury earlier this week in Australia, where nine members of the SwimMAC Carolina team are staying after competing at the BHP Billiton Super Series.
A statement from SwimMAC indicates that the injury came from “the lower portion of her left leg,” but a source tells Swimming World that the injury was specifically with her fibula, or calf bone.
From the SwimMAC Carolina press release:
(Lawrence) will remain in Australia until the scheduled departure date, and will undergo a complete evaluation by Team Elite’s physician, Dr. Jason Batley, once she returns to the United States. Examinations so far indicate she could be back in the water for training as early as next week.
Lawrence swam well in Perth last weekend, placing second in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes. She will swim both events at the world championships later this summer, and will look to equal or upgrade the bronze medal she won at the 2013 worlds in the 200 breaststroke.
Though the release indicates that Lawrence could return to training next week, it’s unclear how soon she’ll be back into racing shape. With about seven months until the start of the world championships, Lawrence has ample time to heal and get back into form.
