Melani Costa Wins Twice On Day Four of Spanish Championships

On day four of the 2016 Spanish summer championships, a number of swimmers made their way onto the podium again.

Melani Costa won the women’s 100 freestyle in 55.67 ahead of Marta Gonzalez in 55.90. Bronze went to 200 freestyle runner up Patricia Castro Ortega in 56.33.

Costa then posted a 2:11.12 to win the 200 backstroke. Africa Zamorano placed second in 2:11.68. Third went to 100 backstroke champion Duane Da Rocha in 2:12.66.

Mireia Belmonte won again, tonight in the 1500 freestyle. She touched in 16:01.00, three seconds shy of her meet record. Maria Vilas finished second in 16:13.99 and in 16:20.30 Jimena Perez earned third place.

Hector Fontabella had a second and a half lead over the field in the men’s 200 backstroke. He won the event in 2:01.08. Alejandro Garcia was second in 2:02.66.

The men’s 100 freestyle was won by Mortiz Berg in 49.96, as the only finisher under 50 seconds. Juan Gutierrez touched second in 50.01 and Oskitz Aguilar was on his heels in 50.04 for third place.

Jessica Vall claimed the women’s 100 breaststroke title in 1:07.63. She adds that win to yesterday’s 50 breaststroke. Marina Garcia swam a 1:08.66 for runner up honors.

Eduardo Solaeche stopped the clock in 1:02.83 to win the men’s 100 breaststroke. Joan Ballester was second in 1:03.20. Andres Melconian completed the podium in 1:03.54.
