Madelyn Donohoe, Jack McIntyre Win On Opening Night Of Buffalo Sectionals
The non-Olympic distance events for men and women were the only races on the docket for tonight’s competition at the USA Swimming sectionals meet in Buffalo, N.Y., where races are being held in long course meters.
Madelyn Donohoe, just 13 years old representing the FISH, dropped 15 seconds off her lifetime best to win the women’s 1500 freestyle with a 16:50.46. Donohoe began to pull away from the pack after 500 meters to win by 10 seconds.
Lindsay Stone of PACK Swim Team of Pittsford had a race on her hands in the closing 100 meters, but held off Bryanna Cameron of SOLO Aquatics to place second, 17:00.31 to 17:00.94. Also in the hunt was Michelle Owens of FISH with a 17:01.05 for fourth.
In the men’s 800 free, Eastern Express’ Jack McIntyre and Ian Russiello of the FISH were swimming even for 600 meters, virtually stroke for stroke. At that point, McIntyre put up faster splits in the last 200 meters to take the win with an 8:24.71 to Russiello’s 8:27.93. Well back in third was Chris Balbo of Cougar Aquatic Team with an 8:41.49.
