South Australian swim sensation Kyle Chalmers has posted another red-hot time in Adelaide tonight in the countdown to next week’s Hancock Prospecting Australian Swimming Championships when the best swimmers in the country chase berths on the Australian Olympic Swim Team for Rio.

The 17-year-old from Marion clocked a personal best time of 1:47.23 to win the 17-18 years 200m freestyle on night three of the Georgina Hope Foundation 2016 Australian Age Championships.

It followed Chalmers Australian Age and Australian All-Comers record of 22.15 to win the 50 metres on the opening night of the Championships.

Chalmers powered home over the final 50 metres tonight in 26.90 after splitting 52.65 at the 100m mark in an eye-catching swim at the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre.

The powerfully build youngster, who will contest the 50 and 100m freestyle events in his quest for a berth on the Australian Olympic team, has not entered the 200m freestyle at next week’s Championships – concentrating on the two sprint freestyle events.

His time tonight would have seeded him sixth behind major Olympic contenders Cameron McEvoy (1:45.94), David McKeon (1:46.33), Daniel Smith (1:46.50), Tom Fraser-Holmes (1:46.83) and Grant Hackett (1:46.84) who are expected to fight out next week’s 200m freestyle final in the battle for individual and relay spots for Rio.

In a strong show of depth in tonight’s 17-18 years final St Peters Western, QLD pair Clyde Lewis (1:48.43) and Jack Cartwright (1:48.64) finished second and third respectively behind Chalmers.

In other events Chalmers 15-year-old Marion team mate Emily Liu claimed a rare 50-400m freestyle double – first winning the 400m freestyle in 4:10.76 before taking out the 50m final in 25.86.

There was another double to Melbourne Vicentre’s 14-year-old Oliver Nash who collected gold in the 200m butterfly in 2:06.00 and the 100m freestyle in 53.07.

The Hancock Prospecting Australian Swimming Championships will start at the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre next Thursday, April 7 featuring the cream if Australia’s Dolphins with the Australian Olympic Swim Team named on April 14.
