Katie Ledecky Smokes 500 Free American, H.S. Mark (Race Video)

BOYDS – Last night, superstar Katie Ledecky took down the American and high school record in the 500-yard freestyle at the D.C. Metro Championships during prelims.

This morning, race footage showing her beat the entire field by 75 yards has shown up.

Ledecky, swimming for Stone Ridge in her final high school meet before heading off to Stanford or a gap year to focus on the Olympics, blasted a time of 4:26.58 in prelims tonight, demolishing her previous American record and high school record of 4:28.71 set a year ago at this meet.

Katie Ledecky American Record Splits

24.94, 51.74 (26.80), 1:18.70 (26.96), 1:45.77 (27.07), 2:12.96 (27.19), 2:39.80 (26.84), 3:06.63 (26.83), 3:33.76 (27.13), 4:00.63 (26.87), 4:26.58 (25.95).

Yes, she came home in 25.95.  That’s just unreal.

Dagny Knutson remains in control of the national public school record with her 4:34.78 swimming for North Dakota in 2008.

There’s always two ways to skin cat or swim a record-breaking 500 free as following splits attest:

500 YARD FREESTYLE
Top 2 Performances
4:26.58*+ Katie Ledecky, Stone Ridge Academy WA. Metro Champs. Boyds [MD.] 02-06-15
(Splits: 51.74, 1:45.77 [54.03], 2:39.80 [54.03], 3:33.76 [53.96], 4:26.58 [52.82].
(Note: U.S. Open/American/17-18 NAG/national independent-school/PV Swimming records.
(Note: final 50, 25.95!
(Note: second American scy record in 62 days. Broke own 1650 standard U.S. Nationals in
Greensboro, NC, December 6 w/a 15:13.30 clocking.
(Note: world record-holder, 400 meter freestyle.)
4:28.71p# Ledecky WA. Metro Champs. Boyds 02-07-14
(Splits: 51.15, 1:44.97 [53.83], 2:39.47 [54.50], 3:34.28 [54.81], 4:28.71 [54.43].
(Note: opening 200 free split fastest all-time en route to 500 free clocking.
(Note: Ledecky’s second scy U.S. Open/American record in 67 days. Set the 1650 standard
U.S. Nationals in Knoxville November 30.
(Note: second female prepster to set AR in prep competition. First was Kate Ziegler, who swam
a 4:33.35 this same meet eight years ago.
Only male prepster to accomplish this feat is Upland [CA.’s] Jeff Kostoff, who swam a 4:16.39
500 free the 1983 CIF Championships in Belmont Plaza. That time broke Brian Goodell’s
4:16.40 from 1978 AAUs in Austin. Kostoff swam collegiately Stanford and twice
won NCAA 1650 free golds for Skip Kenney’s Cardinal.
(Note: girls’ national 500 free high-school record still belongs to Janet Evans, who swam a
4:37.20 the 1988 CIF Championships for El Dorado High, also Belmont. Evans swam
for Stanford her freshman and soph seasons [1988-’89, ‘89-’90, winning/setting records in
the 500-1650 frees for the late Richard Quick. In the summer of ’88 Evans
was a triple gold-medalist the Seoul Olympics [400-800 frees, 400 IM])
(Note: 15-16 NAG record.)

Interestingly, this same meet last week where Ledecky set the national prep [independent-school] 200 free record [pr 1:41.82], the boy who won 500 free clocked 4:26.42. And of course the national prep boys 500 free standard is 4:13.87 by now Texas sophomore Jack Conger from this meet two years ago.

So, Katie, you STILL have a long ways to go to beat the boys!

But presumably after she goes 3:55+ for the 400 meter free Rio she’ll win 2K17 NCAA 500 free for Stanford in 4:10+.
