James Guy couldn’t help but notice the amazing underwater kicking skills by Ryan Lochte in the final of the 200 freestyle at the FINA world championships. But, the Brit was able to overcome Lochte’s kicking skills to claim his first major international gold medal with a 1:45.14.
“He’s like a dolphin,” Guy said of Lochte. “I could see him on his back, and (I was thinking), ‘What is he doing?’ I could see me catching him, and then he turned and (after the underwater) he would be ahead of me.”

Of all the top names in the field, including Sun Yang, Paul Biedermann and Chad Le Clos, Guy points to Lochte as the swimmer he most idolizes.
“I never thought I’d race Ryan Lochte head-to-head like that,” Guy said. “He’s one of my heroes. To touch my hand on the wall first hasn’t sunk in, but I’m so happy.”
Cameron McEvoy was well off his best in the 200m final.
