Grant Shoults, who preps at St. Margarita and trains at Mission Viejo, took down one of the longest standing records in the high school books at the CIF Southern Section Division 1 Championships.
Shoults clocked a time of 1:34.54 to win the boys 200-yard free in Riverside.
That swim eclipsed the national independent school record of 1:34.96 set by Joe Hudepohl for St. Xavier back in 1991.
Hudepohl’s record had stood as the overall mark for decades before it finally fell in 2009 when Tom Shields clocked a 1:33.83 at this meet for public school Edison High. That swim still stands as the top time ever in high school history.
Shoults split his race 22.67, 46.87 (24.20), 1:10.58 (23.71), 1:34.54 (23.96).
