FINA responded to a recent flurry of media activity surrounding positive doping tests by Chinese swimmers with a statement today stating that it is aware that everything is happening, but will not comment on the situation.

It’s pretty much a non-statement statement, but is a step forward in the fight to open up the adjudication process within FINA to some daylight.

Wang Lizhuo, An Jiabao and Zhao Ying all tested positive last year, and have been working through the hearing process until recently.

Wang and An both were only issued a warning by the Chinese Swimming Association for testing positive for the banned substance clenbuterol. Zhao, who also tested positive for clenbuterol, has yet to complete the legal process.

Three other unknown swimmers have been reported to have tested positive in the past few months, with China still working slowly through the adjudication process.

FINA Press Release:

FINA notes the recent media articles about positive tests for the Chinese swimmers Wang Lizhuo and An Jiabao for clenbuterol and the sanctions imposed by the Chinese Swimming Association.

FINA has received the decisions issued on these two athletes, and is currently reviewing them. As for the 2016 cases, FINA was informed that CHINADA is presently conducting the results management process, and that a decision is still to come.

Whilst not wishing to pre-judge the issue, this is part of FINA’s drive to rid our sport of the scourge of doping and protect the majority of our athletes who are clean.

FINA will not make additional comments on those cases. Any further FINA development on this matter will be communicated through the usual channels, namely the publication of the decisions in the FINA website.
