Cuba’s Hanser Garcia, Mexico’s Maria Fernanda Gonzalez Set Meet Marks at Central American and Caribbean Games

VERACRUZ – Cuba’s Hanser Garcia and Mexico’s Maria Fernanda Gonzalez each set meet records during night one of the Central American and Caribbean Games.

Garcia blasted the meet record in the men’s 100-meter free with a time of 49.00. That swim crushed the 49.55 set by Albert Subirats back in 2006 in Cartagena. Venezuela’s Cristian Quintero touched second in 49.66 tonight with Subirats earning third in 50.52.

This morning, Gonzalez downed the meet record in the women’s 50-meter back with a 28.77 during prelims.  That swim cleared the 29.18 set by Grisela Morales of Guatemala back in 2010.

Gonzalez came up short of the record in finals, but still managed to pull out a victory in 29.03. Morales placed second tonight in 29.67 with Colombia’s Isabella Arcila tying Venezuela’s Jeserik Pinto for third with 29.71s.

Venezuela’s Andreina Pinto smashed the women’s 400-meter free finale with a 4:11.65.  That swim just missed her own meet record of 4:11.36 from 2010 in Mayaguez.  Joanna Evans of the Bahamas (4:16.82) and Natalia Jaspeado of Mexico (4:17.43) placed second and third.

Andres Felipe Montoya clocked a 1:59.35 to win the men’s 200-meter fly, while Venezuela’s Marcos Lavado touched second in 2:00.44.  Mexico’s Jose Angel Martinez snared third in 2:01.26.

In an exciting finish, Venezuela’s Mercedes Toledo touched out Mexico’s Byanca Melissa Rodriguez, 1:10.83 to 1:10.97, in the women’s 100-meter breast. Both came up short of Alia Atkinson’s 2010 meet mark of 1:10.25.  Venezuela’s Karina Vivas wound up third in 1:12.72.

I rather doubt Gisella Morales is from Guam as that’s a tad too far west to be a Central American and/or Caribbean nation.

She”s from Guatemala and was an “All America” backstroker at Auburn a few years ago. Think she may have also”swum for her country at London but not positive.

Morales’ scy 100-200 back prs for Auburn are 54.75/1:56.78 from 2K6 NCAAs Georgia

LCM only time I have for her is in 200 back where she swam a pr/Guatemala and CAC Championship record 2:12.36 in 2K10 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.
