In a much clearer victory than yesterday’s video finish in the women’s 10K, USA’s Chip Peterson snagged the men’s 10K title at Lake Ontario as part of the 2015 Pan American Games.
That’s Peterson’s second Pan American Games gold medal after having won the 1500-meter free pool event in 2007 as well as taking silver in the 10K open water swim at that edition in Rio de Janeiro.
Peterson also has won international gold medals in the 10K at the 2005 Montreal World Championships, 2006 Victoria Pan Pacific Championships and 2010 Irvine Pan Pacific Championships.
Peterson was joined by compatriot David Heron on the podium as Heron took silver ih 1:54:07.4. Heron, currently training at the University of Tennessee, had his international breakout swim today.
Previously, Heron had won the 10K at the 2012 Junior Pan Pacific Championships and done well at U.S. Nationals in 2012 and 2015. But, this is his first major international medal at the senior level.
With results still unofficial, it looks like Esteban Enderica Salgado of Ecuador topped Canada’s Richard Weinberger for bronze, 1:54:09.2 to 1:54:09.3.
