Chad Le Clos, Michael Andrew Perform in South Africa
STELLENBOSCH – South African superstar Chad le Clos and U.S. National Age Group record holder Michael Andrew are two of the top names competing at the South African Grand Prix stop in Stellenbosch this weekend.
The two dueled in the men’s 100-meter freestyle during finals with le Clos snatching victory in 49.48 to move to seventh in the world rankings.
Chris King took second with a 51.64 with Andrew touching third overall in 51.75. That’s only half-a-second off Andrew’s personal best of 51.24 in the event set at last summer’s U.S. Nationals.
Also, according to Andrew’s Instagram account since live results are a bit sketchy, le Clos won the 50 fly in 24.19 with Andrew touching in 24.38.
Andrew also took second behind Jarred Crous, 28.57 to 29.08, in the 50-meter breaststroke. That’s a personal best for Andrew, lowering his 29.25 from the Charlotte stop of the Arena Pro Swim Series last year.
It’s a bit of a homecoming for Andrew as his parents were both born and grew up in South Africa. It’s been a fun trip for his family as he’s spending three months in the area to reconnect with his roots.
