Californians Emma Smethurst, Abriana Howard Give Verbal Commitments to UCLA
NEW COMMITS: The University of California at Los Angeles has received verbal commitments for the Class of 2022 from two Northern Californians- Emma Smethurst and Abriana Howard.
Emma Smethurst
The Walnut Creek Aquabear is primarily a breaststroker. Her best SCY times are:
- 50 Breast 31.54
- 100 Breast 1:03.93
- 200 Breast 2:19.43
She’ll be a senior at Northgate High School this fall. Smethurst represented the school at the CIF State championships in the 100 breaststroke this year.
In her announcement on her CollegeSwimming.com profile Smethurst said,
“I chose UCLA because it is an amazing school with a great swim program. The opportunities at UCLA are endless. I am very excited to swim for coaches Cyndi and Naya and to be a part of the Bruin family!!”
Abriana Howard
Howard is a backstroker for the Crow Canyon Country Club Sharks. At the high school level, she swims for Danville’s Monte Vista High School, where she was the CIF- North Coast 100 backstroke section champion this year.
Her best SCY times are:
- 50 back 26.00
- 100 Back 55.06
- 200 Back 1:58.15
- 500 Free 4:57.01
Howard said of her decision,
“I chose UCLA because the team and coaches were extremely welcoming, supportive and made me feel at home. It is the perfect balance between athletics and academics allowing me to be the best I can be. I can’t wait to join the Bruin family! Go Bruins!!!”
