JACKSONVILLE, Florida, October 13. THE University of Virginia is getting a potentially dangerous sprinter in their ranks next fall, as Kasey Schmidt has made a verbal commitment to becoming a Cavalier.

“UVA’s academic reputation and my rapport with the Busch brothers led me to Charlottesville, but the girls on the team and the area won me over!” Schmidt told Swimming World. “I appreciate the other incredible opportunities I had and I am grateful to have formed relationships with some amazing athletes and coaches along the way. Ultimately, I chose to be part of the program that makes me happiest. I can’t wait to be in Virginia with my team! WAHOOWA!”

Schmidt has become a star player on the Bolles School squad, winning the Florida 1A state high school title in the 50 freestyle in 2012 and 2013. Her best time of 22.66 was posted at last November’s high school meet. A month later, she was fifth at the short course junior nationals with a 22.86. Her time from last November was a Bolles School record, an impressive feat knowing that athletes such as future NCAA champion Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace have been a part of the school’s sprinting tradition.

Schmidt also is strong in the 100 free, with a 50.39 lifetime best from last December’s junior nationals. Augie Busch will have a reliable relay star on his team, as four of Schmidt’s five fastest times ever in the 100 free were done as relay leadoffs.

Schmidt also has talents in the 200 free, with a 1:49.60 to her credit from 2012.

In long course, she was sixth in the 50 free at last summer’s junior nationals with a 25.89. Her long course 100 free has the potential for improvement with a personal best of 57.34.

Here’s a “Morning Swim Show” interview with Schmidt:
