Backstroker Katie Minnich Hands Verbal Commitment to Michigan
NEW COMMIT: Two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American Katie Minnich of Royal Oak, Michigan has announced her intention to stay in-state for her college education. Minnich will swim for the University of Michigan beginning in the fall of 2018.
An outstanding backstroker, Minnich competes for Mercy High School in Farmington Hills. She has dominated the 100 backstroke at the MHSAA Division.I Championships, where she is not only the three-time defending champion, but also the Division 1 record holder with a 53.99.
Minnich does her year-round swimming for the Birmingham Blue Dolphins with whom she has competed at both 2016 Winter Juniors and 2017 Summer Juniors.
Minnich’s top SCY times include:
· 50 back – 25.67
· 100 back – 53.99
· 200 back – 1:56.95
· 200 IM – 2:04.35
Her best time in 100 back would have put her in the middle of the B final at the 2017 Big Ten Championships, while her 200 back would have earned her a second swim in the C final. Given the impressive training group she will join in Ann Arbor and her record of steady progress over the past two years (with her current best times reflecting improvements of over a second in the 100 back and almost two seconds in the 200 back since the 2015-2016 season), Minnich should be well-situated to contribute to the Wolverines’ tradition of backstroke success.
Congrats Katie!
