Andrea Toniato Downs Italian, Universiade Record in 50 Breast

Italy’s Andrea Toniato downed the Universiade record in the men’s 50-meter breast at the 2015 World University Games during prelims. The time also stands as an Italian record.
Toniato clocked a top time of 27.06, crushing the rest of the qualifiers, as he erased Kevin Swander’s 2009 mark of 27.14 from the record books. Toniato also vaulted to third in the world rankings.
Toniato also downed the Italian record of 27.17 set by Fabio Scozzoli at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai.

[table “” not found /]Ireland’s Alex Murphy qualified second in 27.49 with Russia’s Kirill Prigoda taking third in 27.58. Serbia’s Caba Siladji (27.59), Brazil’s Raphael Rodrigues (27.62), Germany’s Fabian Schwingenshlogl (27.85), Switzerland’s Martin Schweizer (27.88), South Africa’s Marko Visser (27.94) and Italy’s Lorenzo Antonelli (27.94) also made the top nine spots with Visser and Antonelli sharing the eighth-seed.
Poland’s Dawid Szulich (27.97), Kazakhstan’s Dmitry Balandin (27.98), Latvia’s Nikolai Maskalenko (28.03), Great Britain’s Craig Benson (28.13), USA’s Carsten Vissering (28.17), USA’s DJ MacDonald (28.18) and Czech’s Petr Bartunek (28.21) qualified 10th through 16th.
