5 Ways to Get Through Preseason
By Shelby Iava, Swimming World College Intern
Preseason: one of the most exciting, but terrifying times of the year. Swimming and diving are sports that end up being all-year things. Not even two days after everyone moves back onto campus for another collegiate year, it’s time to meet with the team. Time to go over conditioning, pool practices, and screenings to make sure everyone is cleared for the season.
Not only are you starting brand new classes, but you’re in the beginning of a never-ending season. My definition of preseason is lots of sweat followed by lots of aches, which somehow culminate to make you feel great. Some may even say it’s “hell,” but it all prepares you for what’s to come.
Here are a few things to keep in mind during this tired time…
1. Your Support System
You are not the only one going through this experience. You and your teammates are in it together. They are your friends and your support system. They will be the ones there to push when you feel like giving up. If this is your first preseason, here’s one thing to remember– EVERYONE is out of shape, it’s not just you. This year will be my third preseason, and every year it’s just as hard, but I still manage to get through it. But I wouldn’t be able to without my teammates.
2. Catch Up on Your Sleep
Being well-rested is very important, especially during the first few weeks of school. Jumping into new classes and practices is going to be very tiring and you’re going to feel like you’re constantly running all over the place. There’s no doubt in my mind that after the first practice all you are going to want to do is crash onto your bed. Getting in good habits and working on time management will only benefit you in the upcoming season. Doing well in the pool is important, but school always comes first.
3. Stay On Top of School Work
Being able to get up for that 8 a.m. is tough, I know, but you need to make sure you don’t get into the habit of over-sleeping and skipping class. Every school has different attendance policies, but an athlete shouldn’t be missing many classes, especially when there is already a certain number that we must miss because of meets. And don’t forget– there’s a certain GPA that a student-athlete much achieve to stay eligible.
4. Don’t Get Hangry
Eating the right amounts of food is very important for any athlete. Different people eat different foods, I’m not here to tell you what to eat. Just to make sure that you are eating in general! When someone doesn’t eat, or does’t eat enough, there are many negative side effects that can throw off your daily routine. Not only are you hungry and irritable, but you are also at risk for other health issues. Just paying attention to when and what you’re eating will make keep you healthy and happy.
5. Don’t Forget to Have Fun
College is supposed to be one of the best times of your lives or so we’ve been told. On some days it gets tough and you do struggle, but in the end it will make you a better athlete, teammate and all-around person. Though you put lots of hard work and dedication into what you are doing, the most important thing is to make sure you still are having fun. If you are not in love with the sport, then you will struggle throughout the season. Having team nights are always a good idea– doing something fun and interesting with your teammates which doesn’t revolve around the pool. It gives you a chance to just breathe deeply, kick back, and enjoy everyone’s company.
