Men’s 400 IM
Great Britain’s Max Litchfield led the way in the men’s distance medley prelims with a top time of 4:16.72. That’s just outside the top 20 in the world currently anchored by Peter Bernek’s 4:16.24 from the Hungarian Open Championships.
Australia’s Travis Mahoney claimed the second seed into finals with a 4:17.93, while USA’s Jay Litherland qualified third in 4:18.26.
Japan’s Takeharu Fujimori (4:18.31) and Czech’s Pavel Janecek (4:18.88) also cleared 4:19 to qualify fourth and fifth.
Fujimori is the top ranked swimmer here in Gwangju with a ninth-ranked 4:13.93 from Japanese Nationals, and should turn up the heat during finals.
USA’s Josh Prenot (4:19.27), Austria’s Jakub Maly (4:19.88) and Japan’s Keita Sunama (4:20.53) grabbed the final three transfer spots into finals.
Women’s 400 medley relay
Team USA dominated the preliminary qualifying heats by more than a second.
Rachel Bootsma (1:00.27), Emma Reaney (1:08.25), Christina Bechtel (59.78) and Abbey Weitzeil (54.73) raced their way to a 4:03.03 for the top seed.
Japan’s Miki Takahashi (1:02.09), Miku Kanasashi (1:08.49), Rino Hosoda (59.31) and Yui Yamane (54.26) claimed the second seed in 4:04.15.
Italy’s Arianna Barbieri (1:01.56), Martina Carraro (1:09.30), Elena Di Liddo (58.13) and Aglaia Pezzato (55.52) picked up the third seed in 4:04.51.
Australia (4:05.10), Russia (4:05.70), New Zealand (4:08.22), Canada (4:08.91) and Germany (4:09.09) will also contend for the gold medal.
Men’s 400 medley relay
It is going to be a dogfight during finals with a handful of teams all within striking distance of winning the event.
Russia’s Nikita Ulyanov (54.36), Kirill Prigoda (1:00.55), Aleksandr Sadovnikov (53.23) and Oleg Tikhobaev (49.54) topped prelims with a time of 3:37.68.
USA’s Jack Conger (55.10), Carsten Vissering (1:01.88), Matt Ellis (53.04) and Michael Wynalda (49.22) qualified second in 3:39.24.
Australia’s Travis Mahoney (54.86), Nicholas Schafer (1:00.75), Keiran Qaium (53.00) and Jacob Hansford (50.65) snared the third seed in 3:39.26.
Japan (3:39.88), Poland (3:40.30), France (3:41.16), South Africa (3:41.17) and Great Britain (3:41.23) will also vie for the title.
