Katie Ledecky Smashes World Record During First Night of The Woodlands Senior Invite
SHENANDOAH, Texas, June 19. KATIE Ledecky smashed her own world record in the women’s 1500m freestyle to cap an exciting night of distance swimming at The Woodlands Swim Team Senior Invitational tonight in Shenandoah, Texas.
Ledecky, who swims for Nation’s Capital Swim Club, posted a time of 15:34.23 in the event, lowering her own world record of 15:36.53 from last summer’s FINA World Championships. Ledecky also broke the US Open record for the 800m free with her split of 8:16.18, which is the fastest time in the world this year by two seconds. Janet Evans set the previous US Open record of 8:17.22 way back in 1988.
No one finished within a minute of Ledecky in the race, as her teammate at NCAP, Isabella Rongione, finished second in 16:39.86. Haley Rowley of the Denver Hilltoppers took third in 16:54.03.
US national team member and 2012 Olympian Andrew Gemmell collected the men’s 800m free title, touching first in 8:01.43, about six seconds ahead of North Carolina’s Matthew Hirschberger (8:07.72). Jake Ores of Loveland Swim Club rounded out the top three in 8:20.75.
