Swimming Australia President Barclay Nettlefold in Hot Water
AUSTRALIA, May 31. SWIMMING Australia President Barclay Nettlefold is under investigation after being accused of inappropriate behavior towards a female consultant for Swimming Australia, as reported by Adelaide Now. Mark Anderson, the new chief executive for Swimming Australia, has reportedly launched the investigation.
“A member of the team staff made a formal complaint about an inappropriate remark and that complaint has been taken seriously and is currently being handled through the Swimming Australia Member Welfare Policy,” Anderson said. “I can confirm that both parties and the Swimming Australia board have expressed their confidence in the process that is being followed, and the aim is to resolve that process swiftly and to everyone's satisfaction.”
Nettlefold reported apologizing to the female staff member involved. “As the president of Swimming Australia, I need to lead by example and not make remarks that could be taken the wrong way, or be considered inappropriate,” he said.
Nettlefold was appointed president of Swimming Australia in October 2012. He replaced David Urquhart as the head of the organization, after Urquhart stepped down from the position after serving two terms. Nettlefold took the position during a period of major reorganization and review of Swimming Australia following its disappointing performance at the London 2012 Olympic Games and accusations of a “toxic” team culture.
