Swiss National Championships: David Karasek Downs Swiss Record on Final Day
ZURICH, Switzerland, March 18. A pair of Swiss national records took a tumble on the final day of the Swiss National Championships held in Zurich. The meet took place in long course meters.
David Karasek shot down the Swiss record in the men's 200 IM with 2:01.79 during prelims, before returning in the evening to win in 2:02.85. His preliminary time crushed the 2:03.91 set by Stephan Bachmann back in 2008. Karasek is now on his way back to the U.S. to compete for Virginia at the NCAA Division I Men's Championships this week. Elijah Stolz placed second in 2:06.90, while Yannick Kaser finished third in 2:07.11.
The foursome of Flori Lang, Dominik Meichtry, Martin Schweizer and Daniel Rast downed the Swiss record in the men's 400 medley relay with a 3:45.31. That swim bested the 3:45.65 set back in 2009.
Earlier in the evening, Meichtry topped the men's 100 fly in 53.81. Nico Van Duijn (53.87) and Alexandre Liess (54.34) placed second and third. Lang also won a title this evening with a 22.61 to triumph in the men's 50 free. Erik Van Dooren (22.91) and Aurelien Kunzi (22.95) picked up second and third.
Jovan Mitrovic topped the men's 800 free in 8:07.51, moving up to 19th in the world rankings with the effort. Stefan Sigrist (8:25.40) and Nils Liess (8:27.79) finished second and third. Julia Hassler touched in 16:46.77 to win the women's 1500 free, and improve to 14th in the world rankings. Anais Desplanches (17:25.18) and Cherelle Oestringer (17:32.95) rounded out the top three.
Annick van Westendorp claimed the women's 200 IM title in 2:23.26, while Sheena Cameron took second in 2:23.66. Fabienne Schwerzmann wound up third in 2:23.82. Maria Ugolkova won the women's 100 fly in 59.87. Danielle Villars (1:00.45) and Ava Pretre (1:03.94) took second and third.
Virginia Schumacher captured the women's 50 free in 26.82. Franziska Hugli (26.93) and Florence Sigg (26.96) completed the top three. Seraina Sturzenegger, Danielle Sims, Stephanie Spahn and Julia Hassler
