Euro Long Course Meet: Laurent Carnol, Ioannis Drymonakos Set Meet Records; Post Early Season Bellwether Marks; Ian Thorpe Competes
LUXEMBOURG, January 28. THE second day of action at the Euro Long Course Meet in Luxembourg featured some strong swims throughout the evening.
Laurent Carnol topped the early world rankings in the men's 200 breast with a 2:09.78. That swim smashed his previous meet record of 2:13.23 from 2011, and would have ranked him eighth in the world a year ago. Eric Shanteau had the previous best time this short year with a 2:10.72 from the Austin Grand Prix. Igor Borysik (2:11.64) and Oleksiy Rozhkov (2:13.98) took second and third.
Ioannis Drymonakos lowered a meet record en route to a top ranking as well. He clocked a 1:57.56 in the men's 200 fly to better Denys Sylantyev's 2008 meet mark of 1:58.08. He also bettered Yuta Kimura's 1:57.95 that had stood as the top time in the world this year. Velimir Stjepanovic (2:00.45) and Alon Mandel (2:00.53) completed the podium.
Raphael Stacchiotti captured the men's 200 IM in 2:00.22. That time bested the meet record of 2:02.95 set by Markus Deibler in 2011, and pushed Stacchiotti to second in the early world rankings behind only Michael Phelps (1:58.52). Joe Roebuck (2:00.87) and Deibler (2:02.76) took second and third.
Andriy Govorov downed the meet record in the men's 50 fly with a 23.82.That swim bettered his 2011 meet mark of 23.97, and pushed him to third in the early rankings behind Matt Targett (23.51) and Francois Heersbrandt (23.73). Alon Mandel (24.23) and Fotios Koliopoulos (24.34) rounded out the top three. Govorov doubled with a 22.48 to win the men's 50 free. Jasper Aerents (22.56) and Fotios Koliopoulos (22.88) claimed second and third.
Barbora Zavadova clocked a 2:14.57 in the women's 200 IM, eclipsing the meet record of 2:16.47 set by Yana Klochkova back in 2008. Laura Letrari (2:16.98) and Ida Marko-Varga (2:17.77) finished second and third. Amit Ivry and Amy Smith tied for the women's 50 fly title with matching 26.88s. Darya Stepanyuk earned third in 27.45.
Amy Smith cleared the meet standard in the women's 50 free with a 25.34. That performance surpassed the 25.41 set by Petra Dallmann back in 2008. Theodora Drakou (25.50) and Darya Stepanyuk (25.87) placed second and third.
Lisa Fissneider hit the wall in 32.16 to win the women's 50 breast. Aggeliki Eksarchou (32.42) and Katrine Liljedahl (32.67) placed second and third. She doubled up with a 2:28.62 in the women's 200 breast. Maria-Georgia Michalaka (2:31.77) and Eksarchou (2:32.91) earned second and third.
Youri Samulich claimed the men's 200 free title in 1:50.96, while Markus Deibler (1:51.09) and Pholien Systermans (1:51.42) took second and third. After qualifying second in prelims, Ian Thorpe faded to fourth this evening in 1:51.51. Caitlin McClatchey touched out Silke Lippok, 1:58.73 to 1:58.86, for the women's 200 free crown. Bethany Carlson wound up third in 2:02.81.
Lennart Stekelenburg won the men's 50 breast in 28.47, while Hugues Duboscq (28.55) and Panagiotis Samalidis (28.89) touched second and third. Martina Van Berkel topped the women's 200 fly in 2:11.88, while Ida Marko-Varga touched second in 2:11.91. Sabrina Marzahn checked in third with a 2:17.33.
Israel's Jonatan Kopelev (55.00) and Yakov Toumarkin (55.92) went 1-2 in the men's 100 back, while Jean-Francois Schneiders took third in 56.51. Laura Letrari topped the women's 100 back in 1:02.33. Daryna Zevina and Simona Baumrtova tied for second with matching 1:02.52s.
