FINA World Junior Championships: Evan Pinion, Daryna Zevina, Lia Neal Win in Meet Record Times
LIMA, Peru, August 18. THE FINA World Junior Championships continued this evening in Lima, Peru with several more meet records taking a tumble in the long course meter competition.
USA's Evan Pinion rocketed to a meet record of 7:55.92 in the men's 800 free. That swim crushed the previous record of 8:01.77 set by Heerden Herman back in 2008, and skyrocketed Pinion to 19th in the world rankings in the event. Italy's Gabriele Detti finished second in 8:00.22, while teammate Gregorio Paltrinieri claimed third in 8:02.06.
Ukraine's Daryna Zevina led a foursome under the meet record of 2:11.45 in the 200 backstroke set by Miyu Otsuka in earlier qualifying. Zevina won the title this evening with a 2:10.43, while Otsuka took second in 2:11.02. Great Britain's Karley Mann (2:11.40) and Canada's Brittany MacLean (2:11.45) also either tied, or beat the meet record.
USA's Lia Neal kept on rolling with the first sub-55 second time in meet history in the women's 100 free. She won in 54.90 to best her previous standard of 55.18 set yesterday. Canada's Van Landegham took second in 55.29, while Australia's Bronte Campbell earned third in 55.46.
USA's Maclin Davis claimed the men's 100 fly title in 53.24. Japan's Kenta Hirai picked up second in 53.40, while Brazil's Arthur Mendes placed third in 53.96.
In semifinal action, South Africa's Vanesa Mohr lowered the women's 50 fly meet record with a 26.70. That time clipped the 26.77 set by Silvia Di Pietro in 2008. Egypt's Farida Hisham Osman took second in qualifying in 26.84, while Canada's Chantal Van Landeghem placed third in 26.91.
Greece's Kristian Gkolomeev paced the men's 50 free in 22.69, while Australia's Cameron McEvoy earned the second seed with a 22.72. Canada's Luke Peddie qualified third in 22.95.
Italy's Lisa Fissneider lowered the meet record in the women's 100 breast with a 1:08.47 during semis. That swim cleared the 1:08.72 set by Samantha Marshall back in 2008. Russia's Irina Novikova placed second in 1:09.19, while Japan's Kanako Watanabe finished third in 1:09.97.
Germany's Christian Diener clipped the meet record in the men's 50 back with a top-seeded 25.58. That time bettered the 25.60 set by Ben Treffers in 2008. USA's Jacob Pebley (25.94) and Italy's Niccolo Bonacchi (25.95) finished second and third.
