Passages: Peony Munger, 77
WENATCHEE, Washington, September 1. PEONY Munger, who gained attention for swimming a mile of butterfly at every workout, died Friday after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 77 years old.
Munger's workout routine gained her national attention last year when she reached her goal of accomplishing 1,000 miles of butterfly over a four-year period for five days a week.
She was featured on an episode of Swimming World's “Morning Swim Show” in April 2011:
Munger began her famous workout routine as a way to relive her fibromyalgia pain and migraines. She learned to swim at 32 years old when she immigrated to the United States from Korea in 1966 with her husband. As part of her exercise rouinte, she also played a round of golf occasionally and competed in United States Masters Swimming competitions, most recently the 2011 spring nationals.
