INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, March 29. USA Swimming national team director Frank Busch made some news during a broadcast break at the NCAA Division I Men's Championships at the IU Natatorium. As swimmers were prepping to compete in the preliminary part of the 800-yard free relay, Busch supported merging the men's and women's NCAA Division I Championships and keeping them in the Circle City.
“I believe Indianapolis should be the Omaha of college swimming,” Busch said on the Indiana Sports Corp broadcast. “I believe the meet should be combined, and that the meet should be at Indianapolis every year.”
Busch even said on the broadcast that it was a 180 from his previous beliefs on the subject. Should Indy become the permanent host of the NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships, it would return the aura of the IU Nat as the House of Champions. The IU Nat previously served as the selection grounds for the U.S. Olympic Teams.
What do you think about such a high-profile person supporting a merged, permanent-site meet?
