USA Wins Four Gold Medals on Sixth Day of World University Games
IZMIR, Turkey, August 17. AMERICAN breaststrokers went one-two in the 100 distance on the final night of competition at the World University Games. Megan Jendrick and Rebecca Soni topped the field, finishing in 1:08.20 and 1:08.77.
However, that was not the only dynamic duo of the night. In the women's 200 backstroke Aya Terakawa of Japan took her third backstroke gold, going 2:11.81, and her teammate Takami Igarashi took silver in 2:12.23. Team USA's Haley Chura finished fifth.
Otylia Jedrzejczak also earned her third gold medal of the meet by winning the women's 200 butterfly with a time of 2:09.67. Kim Vandenberg from the United States was second with a 2:10.40. Mary Hill, also from the USA, finished seventh.
The men's 50 breast produced the only meet record of the evening with Oleg Lisogor, the world-record holder, touching in 27.63. Kevin Swander from the United States finished fifth.
The United States dominated the men's and women's 50 free this evening, finishing first in both. Cullen Jones broke the meet record with his morning swim of 22.17, and won the final with a 22.22 effort. Meanwhile, Maritza Correia won the women's event with a 25.38 and teammate Sarah Wanezek finished third in 25.60.
The men's 1500 free might have been the race of the night. The race was not for first, with the USA's Justin Mortimer finishing ahead in 15:23.74, but for second. Thomas Lurz (Germany), Igor Chervynskiy (Ukraine) and Takeshi Matsuda (Japan) all finished in 15:26. Lurz took silver with a 15:26.20 and Chervynskiy took bronze with a 15:26.70. Matsuda fell off the medal podium with a close 15:26.72.
Ending the meet and the evening was the men's 400 medley relay. The team from the Ukraine took the final gold medal of the competition with a time of 3:38.49. The United States was second in 3:39.35 and Japan was third in 3:39.36.
