World University Games, Day 1: Jendrick Sizzles in 50 Breaststroke
IZMIR, Turkey, August 12. SIX new University Games records were set during night one of finals, as no event went untouched.
Poland had a succesful night winning both the men's 200 butterfly and the men's 200 breaststroke. Pawel Korzeniowski took the 200 fly with a winning time of 1:56.52. Later, Slawomir Kuczko bested the old record in the 200 breaststroke by more than a second, dropping it from 2:13.78 to 2:12.35.
Megan Jendrick of the United States won the 50 breastroke, beating the rest of the field by nearly a second, clocking in at 30.88.
Finals of the 800 free went to Becky Cooke of Great Britain, who lowered her own mark from 2003 to 8:31.43, followed by Hailey Peirsol, USA, at 8:32.89 and Romania's Camelia Potec at 8:33.33.
The men's 200 back went to Blaz Medvesek (Slovenia) at 1:58.91 followed closely by Japan's Takashi Nakano at 1:59.09.
The 400 freestyle relay concluded the evening's races with Team USA breaking the old meet record from 2001. Andrea Hupman split 56.26, Maritza Correia a 55.71, Sarah Wanezek a 56.22 and Dana Vollmer anchored in 55.78 for a time of 3:43.97.
