Eden Prairie’s Rachel Bootsma Downs National High School Record in Minnesota — Updated with Race Video

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, November 21. LAST night at the Minnesota State High School League Championships, Eden Prairie's Rachel Bootsma shot down the national high school standard in the 100-yard backstroke.

Bootsma ripped off a time of 51.5, which trumped the previous national record of 51.85 set by Edison's Cindy Tran May 5, 2010 in California. Tran's time also stood as the public school record. Natalie Coughlin still owns the private school standard of 52.86 set while at Carondelet in 1998.

Only 14 other swimmers have cleared 52 seconds in the event. Bootsma moved into the middle of that pack to eighth all time.

Individually, Bootsma also won the 100 fly with a time of 52.73, smashing her state record from prelims of 53.67, and coming up short of the national record (52.41) set by Misty Hyman for Shadow Mountain back in 1996.
