IRVINE, California, August 7. DAYTONA Beach's Ryan Lochte, who has long been known as the second-best swimmer in the world behind NBAC's Michael Phelps, is making some serious moves to stand on top of the heap at least by the end of this year. After dominating both the 200 and 400 IMs, Lochte posted a blazing time in the men's 200 back for the win.
Lochte checked in with a 1:55.58 for the victory, just missing the top-ranked time in the world this year of 1:55.52 set by Ryosuke Irie at the Japan Swim in April. Longhorn's Aaron Peirsol earned second overall with a 1:56.28 to move to third in the world, while FAST's Tyler Clary placed third in 1:56.36 for fourth in the world rankings.
Phelps, who has long been the top swimmer in the world as evidenced by four straight Swimming World World Swimmers of the Year awards, finished fourth with a 1:56.98 and might have a tough time clinching his fifth straight nod should Lochte continue to perform in such a fashion.
SwimMAC's Nick Thoman (1:57.71), Tucson Ford's Matt Grevers (1:57.73), Daytona Beach's Rex Tullius (1:58.00) and Tucson Ford's Cory Chitwood (1:59.17) claimed fifth through eighth overall.
SwimMAC's Eugene Godsoe picked up the B final victory with a 2:00.94 for the win.
