COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 28. ARIZONA's Cory Chitwood completed a remarkable comeback after a shoulder injury forced a medical redshirt last year.
Chitwood concluded the journey back from injury with an amazing swim in the 200 back. Chitwood threw down a 1:39.29 for the win, breaking Matt Grevers' 2007 pool record set for Northwestern. The performance jumped Chitwood to sixth all time in the event, behind only Ryan Lochte, Tyler Clary, Aaron Peirsol, Jake Tapp and Grevers. Chitwood also became the first Wildcat to ever win the event.
"I've had this written on my cap all week: ‘Andy Rose this is for you,'" Chitwood said. "This race was for my youth coach, who passed away a couple of months ago."
Clary, representing Michigan, could not defend his title as he fell back to second with a 1:39.89. Clary has had to battle through several issues including H1N1 this year. Last year, Clary topped the event with a 1:37.58. Stanford's Eugene Godsoe rounded out the top three in 1:40.07.
Texas had four swimmers score en route to taking the lead with 365 points. California scored with one swimmer, falling to second with 353.5 points. Arizona (315), Florida (294) and Stanford (272) look to be the rest of the top five the rest of the way.
