WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana, March 19. THE University of Arizona fans erupted when the Wildcats claimed the 200 medley relay to open the second night, while the team title race witnessed a shocking double disqualification of favorite Georgia and surging Virginia.
The foursome of Ana Agy, Ann Chandler, Erin Campbell and Justine Schluntz threw down a top time of 1:35.75. That swim beat the pool record of 1:36.61 set by the same squad during prelims. The triumph is Arizona's third in four years, moving it into a tie with Georgia and Texas on the all time list of 200 medley relays.
"Being able to win this relay with four seniors swimming on it is really special, to be able to give back to this program which has given us so much is rewarding," Schluntz said.
Tennessee's Jennifer Connolly, Alex Barsanti, Kelsey Floyd and Michele King claimed second in 1:36.90, while Florida's Gemma Spofforth, Lindsey Rogers, Jemma Lowe and Sarah Bateman finished third with a 1:37.01.
Stanford finished sixth overall, which helped them to a leading tally of 168.5 points. California jumped into second with 152 points, while Arizona moved to third with 146 points. Florida grabbed fourth with 139 points, while Georgia fell back to fifth with 134 points after the unfortunate disqualification due to an early takeoff.
Swimming World confirmed with meet management that both Georgia and Virginia's DQs were final.
