Euro Meet: Randall Bal Sets Meet Record; Steffen Deibler, Coralie Balmy Double Up

LUXEMBOURG, January 30. THE second day of long course meter action at the Euro Meet in Luxembourg featured the first meet record of the weekend courtesy of Randall Bal. Meanwhile, Steffen Deibler and Coralie Balmy both posted daily doubles.

Bal crushed the meet record in the men's 100 back with a time of 54.94. He eclipsed the 55.67 set by Helge Meeuw in 2008. Radoslaw Kawecki took second in 56.51, while Jean-Francois Schnieders took third in 57.86. Jenny Mensing claimed the women's 100 back in 1:02.10. Daryna Zevina wound up second in 1:03.74, while Sarah Rolko grabbed third in 1:03.89.

Deibler just missed the meet record in the men's 50 fly with a time of 24.15. Andriy Serdinov's 2003 time of 24.11 withstood the challenge. Simon Hengel earned second in 24.92, while Maximilian Oswald posted a third-place time of 25.18. Uta Muller cleared 28 seconds with a 27.89 in the women's 50 fly. Franziska Hentke touched second in 28.16, while Annika Mehlhorn took third in 28.30.

Deibler doubled up with a bit of an upset over Alain Bernard, 22.55 to 22.71, in the men's 50 free. Grandjean completed the top three in 23.16. Vyacheslav Shyrshov's 2003 meet record of 22.43 held up. Balmy won the women's 50 free in 26.38, while Annika Bruhn took second in 26.51. Julika Niegisch finished third in 26.56.

Balmy raced to her second victory with a 2:00.73 in the women's 200 free. Rieneke Terink finished second in 2:01.52, while Franziska Jansen took third in 2:03.40. Christophe Fildebrandt emerged from a group of five men clocking 1:52s in the men's 200 free. Fildebrandt won in 1:52.13, while Grandjean placed second in 1:52.49 and Christian Kubusch took third in 1:52.61. Joel Ax (1:52.63) and Allen Lindenberg (1:52.65) also eclipsed 1:53.

Dimitrios Xynadas clocked a swift 28.53 in the men's 50 breast prelims before topping the finale in 28.83. Igor Borysik settled for second in 29.14, while Marco Koch picked up third in 29.46. Ashleigh Hyland claimed the women's 50 breast title in 33.38 with Laura Simon taking a close second in 33.64. Sybille Dalacker completed the top three in 33.71.

Denys Dubrov knocked off Raphael Stacchiotti, 2:04.14 to 2:04.41, in the men's 200 IM. Fabien Horth grabbed third in 2:05.31. Nina Schiffer topped the women's 200 IM in 2:18.21. Mehlhorn snared her second podium of the night with a 2:19.24, while Lieke Verouden placed third in 2:19.45.

Laurent Carnol won the men's 200 breast in 2:14.46, while Christian Von Lehn fell to second in 2:14.95. Borysik claimed his second podium of the day with a third-place 2:19.24. Julie Parnol won the women's 200 breast in 2:35.03 in front of CN Antibes' teammate Adeline Martin (2:35.55). Jessica Steiger took a distant third in 2:39.44.
