FINA World Championships, Swimming: China’s Sun Yang Tops Qualifying in Men’s 1500 Free

ROME, Italy, August 1. IT took nearly a sub-15:00 swim to make the men's 1500 free finale tomorrow night at the FINA World Championships.
China's Sun Yang touched out Tunisia's Ous Mellouli, 14:54.54 to 14:54.56, in the final heat to take the top seed heading into finals tomorrow.
Canada's Ryan Cochrane finished third overall with a 14:56.56, while Spain's Marco Rivera placed fourth in 14:57.47. Rivera became the first Spaniard to clear 15:00 as he broke his national record of 15:07.90 set in April.
China's Zhang Lin (14:58.46), Italy's Federico Colbertaldo (14:58.98), Great Britain's David Davies (15:00.52) and Italy's Samuel Pizzetti (15:00.70) completed the final field.
Korea's Tae Hwan Park continued a rough meet as he finished just outside of the final eight with a ninth-place 15:00.87.
