ROME, Italy, July 27. AUSTRALIA's Brenton Rickard put on a show with a world record in the men's 100 breast at the FINA World Championships.
Rickard crushed the world record with a stunning time of 58.58 to break both the official world record of 58.91 set by Kosuke Kitajima at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and the controversial world's best time of 58.67 from Ukraine's Igor Borysik earlier this summer.
France's Hugues Duboscq captured silver with a sizzling 58.64, also under both previous top times in the event. He became the fifth man in the 58-second club.
South Africa's Cameron van der Burgh snatched bronze in 58.95, while Eric Shanteau of the U.S. finished outside of the podium and his American record with a fourth-place 58.98.
Borysik placed fifth in 59.23, while Lithuania's Giedrius Titenis (59.27), Germany's Hendrik Feldwehr (59.33) and Brazil's Henrique Barbosa (59.54) all easily cleared 1:00.
