COLUMBIA, Missouri, July 24. THE third night of long course meter action at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Columbia, Mo., featured a trio of listed region records being rewritten.
Kansas City Blazer Shannon Vreeland won the women's 400 free in 4:20.95 to start the night. Hawgs' Alison Templin finished second in 4:21.05, while teammate Jamie Marks placed third in 4:23.91. Vreeland's club went 1-2-3 in the men's 400 free with Bobby Bollier winning in 3:58.95. Jayson King placed second in 4:01.25 with Kevin Webster taking third in 4:01.44.
Parkway's Elizabeth Smith lowered the listed region record with a 1:10.45 in the women's 100 breast. The time bettered the 1:10.66 set by Caroline Bruce in 2003. Columbia's Leah Pierce took second in 1:11.92 with Wichita's Nikki Daniels finishing third in 1:12.45. Roman Sludnov edged the listed region record in the men's 100 breast with a 1:04.50. His effort cleared the 1:04.55 set by Michael Bruce in 2000. Dolphin-Laser's Roy Chambers touched second in 1:04.93 with Kansas City Blazer Nate Ladner earning third in 1:05.28.
Marks turned 400 free bronze into 200 fly gold when she stopped the clock in 2:15.69. Chesapeake's Katherine Whitbeck placed well behind with a second-place 2:18.84. Aquahawk's Brittany Potter finished third in 2:19.09. Bollier doubled again, this time with a 200 fly victory in 2:02.04. Tsunami's Jason King placed second in 2:05.06, while Hawgs' Ellis Miller wound up third in 2:06.93.
Topeka's Shara Stafford clocked a region-record time of 1:01.79 in the women's 100 back. The swim beat the listed mark of 1:02.73 set by Janie Wagstaff back in 1991. Parkway's Taylor Wohrley finished second in 1:03.73 with Topeka's Emily Dicus snagging third in 1:05.19. Miller went from third in the 200 fly to first in the 100 back with a 58.01. CSP's Chase Grimes took second in 58.20, while Mizzou's Jeff Hendricks garnered third in 58.92.
