ROME, Italy, July 17. IT should not be surprising that the Chinese dominated the first day of diving at the FINA World Championships held in Rome. It is just what they do as the most dynamic diving country in the world.
During the first day of action in Rome, Qin Kai and Zhang Xinhua swept the top two medals for China during the men's one-meter individual event. Qin collected gold with 449.00 points, while Zhang posted a silver-winning tally of 445.90 points. Australia's Matthew Mitcham completed the podium with a bronze-winning total of 440.20. Notably, Chris Colwill finished ninth for the U.S. with 350.30 points.
The women's 10-meter platform preliminary round also took place today. China's Chen Ruolin led the way with 388.65 points. Australia's Melissa Wu (359.80) and China's Kang Li (342.40) qualified among the top three. Haley Ishimatsu was the top American finisher with a 10th-place tally of 312.90 points.
